Trackless ART System Proposed for Kai Tak Mass Transit

A consortium led by Smart & Green Transit Holdings, a collaborative effort between Transport International Holdings (TIH) and Sun Hung Kai Properties (SHKP), has put forth a bid for the Smart and Green Mass Transit System (SGMTS) in Hong Kong's Kai Tak area. Their proposal centers on the implementation of the Autonomous-rail Rapid Transit (ART) system, a pioneering technology developed by CRRC Corporation.

The core advantage of the ART system lies in its trackless and fully automated operation, eliminating the need for physical tracks or overhead power lines. This design not only promises a zero-emission mode of transport but also boasts significant benefits in terms of quicker deployment and reduced maintenance expenses when compared to traditional railway infrastructure. Furthermore, its inherent flexibility facilitates easier expansion and route modifications in the future.

Globally, CRRC's ART system has already established a notable presence. In mainland China, it is actively running on ten different routes across cities such as Zhuzhou, Yibin, Suzhou, Xi'an, and Harbin. These routes collectively span over 140 kilometers and have accumulated an impressive 25 million kilometers in operational distance. TIH reports that these operations have contributed to a reduction of 24,500 tonnes in carbon dioxide emissions. Beyond China, the ART system is also operational in Abu Dhabi, with projects currently under construction in Sarawak, Malaysia, and in the testing phase in Daejeon, South Korea. Worldwide, the system has served over 45 million passenger journeys.

Transport International Holdings, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, The Kowloon Motor Bus Company (1933) Limited, holds the distinction of being Hong Kong's largest franchised bus operator, catering to more than 2.5 million passengers daily. TIH asserts that its extensive experience in public transportation and smart mobility solutions makes it a strong candidate to support the proposed Kai Tak system. Complementing this, Sun Hung Kai Properties believes that its deep expertise in property development will be invaluable to the project team, especially given the anticipated increase in demand for innovative and cost-effective mass transit options arising from the expansion of Hong Kong's New Development Areas.

The introduction of the ART system in Kai Tak signifies a significant step towards modernizing urban transport in Hong Kong. This advanced, environmentally conscious solution offers substantial advantages over conventional methods, addressing both ecological concerns and operational efficiencies. With its proven track record internationally, this initiative could redefine public transit, offering a scalable and sustainable model for future urban development.
